It is not african style. It’s just style (with african fabrics).

Uma das áreas onde é possivel sentir os (pre)conceitos do mundo ocidental em relação a Africa é na moda. A moda africana não é, nem nunca foi, levada a sério. No verão lá nos lembramos que seria giro uns padrões africanos mas maioritariamente utilizamos os padrões animais e chamamos-lhe “african prints” ou “african inspiration” como se africa fosse um país (kill me now…) e estivesse a rebentar de leopardos. Não está. Mas está a rebentar de pessoas, talentosas, que têm uma palavra a dizer e que constroem criações perfeitamente geniais. E quem diz Africa diz toda a região Caribe, entre muitas outras.

Por fim, confesso que estou obcessivamente colada às criações de Stella Jean, uma designer de origens caribenhas que fez furor no Vogue Itália “Who is on  next” com a sua coleção SS2012, que oferece pencil skirts de chorar por mais e um contraste masculino/feminino (ou estrutura/leveza ou exuberância/sobriedade) que acho delicioso.

It is quite easy to feel the western pre-conceived ideas (cal it prejudice, if you will) regarding Africa when it comes fashion. African fashion is not – nor it was ever – taken seriously. We might remember to include some African patterns during the summer, but most of the time we just use animal prints and call them African prints or African ispo or some other silly name. Because, you know, Africa is a country full of leopards, right?  (Kill me now) It is Not. Africa is bursting with talented individuals, who have a word to say on many levels, fashion just being one of them. I am bitching about Africa, but I could be talking about the Caribbean region among many other places. Speaking of which, I am obsessively following Stella Jean, an Italian-Haitian designer that nailed Vogue Italy “Who is on next” with her SS2012 collection. Pencil skirts to die for and a male-female or balance-chaos contrast that I personally find pretty delicious.

O estilo não tem de ser total nem é para ser usado como uma máscara, mas sim integrando elementos de alto impacto, como as sabrinas Nami (que já me estão a dar ideias para um DIY) ou um apontamento no cabelo.

You don’t have to wear it head-to-toe – you can integrate high impact elements like the Nami flats (I smell DIY…just saying) with a sober outfit or include a hair piece.
